Events
are held throughout the United States and the
world to promote the Silver
Ribbon Campaign for the Brain. We hope that you will be able to attend
one of these events, or organize one for your own
organization. Such events provide a platform for raising awareness and
funds for research, advocacy, and social support of individuals with
brain disorders and disabilities.
The
Brain
Injury Association of America (BIAA) was founded in 1980 and is
the leading national organization serving and representing
individuals, families and professionals whose lives are affected by
a traumatic brain injury (TBI).
BIAA has more than 40 chartered state affiliates and hundreds of
local chapters and support groups across the country. The national
organization provides information, education and support to assist
the 5.3 million Americans currently living with traumatic brain
injury and their families.
Camp Wilderness Brain Injury Summer Camp is run by
the
Brain Injury Association of Illinois for children who are
recovering from TBIs. The camp, which offers
many fun activities such as swimming, horseback riding, archery,
and crafts, is located in a beautiful, rustic setting. Silver
Ribbon Ambassador,
Brian Kelly, who sustained a
TBI, attended
Camp Wilderness Brain Injury Summer Camp in 2003. Brian became
interested in the Silver Ribbon Campaign during
recovery from his brain injury. During his extensive recuperation
period, a Silver Ribbon pin was placed at his bedside by a night
nurse. Brian felt
that the Silver Ribbon would be the perfect symbol to use for a BIA
of Illinois fundraiser earmarked for the meaningful camp.

NARSAD is the world’s leading
donor-supported organization dedicated to funding innovative scientific
research to find the causes, improved treatments and cures for serious
brain disorders. NARSAD strives to help those suffering from brain and
behavior disorders build a better future and lead productive lives by
increasing the funding available for psychiatric research.
Since 1987, NARSAD has distributed nearly $200 million in
research grants to over 2,200 scientists around the world. Research on
conditions such as anxiety disorders, autism, bipolar disorder,
depression, eating disorders, schizophrenia and many other adult and

Campaign for the Brain Dinner and Art auction were given
to NARSAD to fund scientific research for brain disorders. Silver Ribbon
Campaign for the Brain Scientific Symposium was organized by NARSAD as a
public service to educate the greater public about specific
brain disorders.

UCI Brain Imaging Center (BIC)
is a world-class facility where cutting-edge research is conducted using
a state-of-the-art Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner. Effective
tools for diagnosis, treatment evaluation, and understanding underlying
mechanisms of brain pathology are essential in improving outcomes for
those afflicted. PET scans provide a picture of the brain’s
metabolic activity that can mean the difference between ineffective
costly trial-and-error treatment and successful outcomes.
UCI's High Resolution Research Tomograph scanner offers
the highest resolution PET images available (-2mm isotropic resolution),
and is one of only thirteen in the world, and five in the United States.
UCI has its own cyclotron and radiochemistry production facility and a
multidisciplinary team of physicians, biomedical engineers,
psychologists, and computer programmers to continue to keep the facility
at the forefront of the continuing advances in brain imaging
methodology. Silver Ribbon Dinners raise money for research
conducted at the Center. |
