On August 23, 2006, Mariel
Hemingway wore the Silver Ribbon as she hosted
SAMHSA's 2nd Annual
Voice Awards in Los Angeles, California. Ms. Hemingway
is an academy award-nominated actress who is the granddaughter
of Ernest Hemingway and sister of Margaux, both of whom
committed suicide during their struggles with depression.
Ms. Hemingway is a strong voice for mental health and suicide
prevention and wrote a biographical account "Finding My
Balance", where she describes her quest for balance in a family
riddled with mental illness (neuropsychiatric disorders).
Voice Awards recognizes writers
and producers of television, radio, and film who give a voice to
those struggling with mental health problems. In addition,
Voice Awards honors the efforts of mental health consumers who
promote awareness and understanding of mental health issues.
At this year's Voice Awards, writers and producers of Law &
Order, Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye, Proof, and Jellysmoke, and others,
and producers of radio shows, "One in Five", and "NPR: Morning
Edition" were among the honorees. Also honored were mental
health consumers and advocates Sandra McQueen-Baker, Lynn Kohr
and Nancy Jensen,
Gayathri Ramprasad, and Doug DeVoe.
